Summary:Muddy Branch Greenway Trail is a 11.9 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Gaithersburg, Maryland that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. Access to the most northern part of the trail (above route 28) will require a horse or mule not afraid to walk through a long, dark culvert. A short stretch on Esworthy Road poses some risk from vehicular traffic, and crossing River Road on a balky horse can be sketchy, but the remainder of this long route is a delight.

Trail Characteristics:Single track. The natural surface trail traverses varied terrain and ecosystems including rocky upland forest, streambanks and meadows, passes by rich vernal pools, and earthen mill remnants. The trail passes The Potomac Horse Center on its way from Darnestown Road in Gaithersburg down to historic Blockhouse Point Conservation Park. A bridge allows users to cross over to Pennyfield Lock and the C&O Canal.

Access and Parking:Potomac Horse Center, owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, offers abundant trailer parking. Parking is also available at Blockhouse Point and Pennyfield Lock.
