The Underground Railroad Experience Trail at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park evokes the experience of enslaved freedom seekers traveling through Montgomery County, Maryland, on their way to safety in the north. Those escaping utilized a network of secret routes and safe houses rather than railroad tracks or tunnels as the name might suggest. The trail is part of the National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program.

This is a pleasant walk that demonstrates typical terrain faced by escaped slaves making their way to freedom on the underground railroad. Features of the trail are marked by the little white signs shown in the picture. These sign are the only markings on the trail and one must be careful not to wander off on one of the many unmarked side trails. If you elect to walk up Meeting House Road, please observe silence near the Friends Meeting House if it's Sunday. The road is private property.

Location:Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring, MD 20860. The trail is located in the northeastern portion of the county in the community of Sandy Spring. The Underground Railroad Experience Trail is part of the National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. It is also one segment of the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail Corridor, a 25-mile trail corridor that will one day connect Patuxent River State Park to Prince George's County.
