Summary:Schaeffer Farm Trail is a 8.8 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Boyds, Maryland that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail.
Activities:horseback riding -- but more commonly mountain biking, hiking.
Location:Schaeffer Farms Trailhead, Kingsview Village Ave, Germantown, MD 20874. From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take I-270 headed west. About 10 miles from the beltway, take Exit 10, Clopper Road (Rte. 117) headed west. Turn left after 4.25 miles on Schaeffer Rd which is just past the intersection with Rte. 118. Just under 2 miles later, as the road bends right, bear left onto a gravel road where there are signs for Schaeffer Farm Trails and the Grey Rock Ranch. Quickly turn left again following the bumpy road to the end and park. The trail head is at the very end of the parking area.
Length/Surface:8.8 miles. Single track dirt, and designed primarily for mountain bikes. The trail below is about 8.53 miles in length.
Trail Characteristics:Rolling hills and open fields. Hills can be brief and steep. The White Loop is the gateway trail to Schaeffer Farm; all the other area trails branch off of it. Fun in either direction, it is a flowing, rolling singletrack through forest and along farm field edges. There are numerous opportunities to branch off and explore deeper into Schaeffer. At the far side of the loop there is a spur trail leading to Black Rock Mill and the Seneca Ridge and Seneca Greenway Trails.

Access and Parking:Get there early - the parking lot, although relatively large, can fill up quickly.
