Summary:The farther west you head on the towpath, the more wildlife and the fewer people you'll see. We came upon a scary woodchuck near the Point of Rocks Tunnel, and once of us decided that was enough for a day.

Location:Between Nolands Ferry on the C&O Canal (end of New Design Road near Nolands Ferry Road, Buckeystown MD 20854) and Point of Rocks Boat Ramp (Canal Road off Commerce St., Point of Rocks, MD 21777)
Length/Surface:8.06 mi. round trip. Point to point. Hard-packed dirt.

Water for Horses:Potomac River or C&O Canal. Freckles doesn't like either.
Access and Parking:Parking at several locations:
  • at Nolands Ferry on the C&O Canal (end of New Design Road near Nolands Ferry Road, Buckeystown MD 20854). This location is a very tight fit. Plan your exit.
  • on the east shoulder of New Design Road before reaching the towpath. Plenty of room here for multiple trailers.
  • at Point of Rocks Boat Ramp (Canal Road off Commerce St., beneath Point of Rocks Bridge in Point of Rocks, MD 21777)
